Living with anxiety is something most of us come to know at some point in life. Anxiety is not a bad feeling in itself; more often than not, it is the way our body tries to protect us. In this post we will get to know anxiety a little more closely, with some general information.

What is anxiety, and what is it for?

Anxiety is a natural response that switches on when a situation seems uncertain or dangerous. The heart speeds up, muscles tighten, and the mind starts listing everything that could go wrong. When it is brief and moderate, it helps us prepare. The difficulty begins when this alarm rings more often or for longer than it needs to.

Small steps for living with anxiety

Trying to get rid of anxiety completely often makes it louder. Learning to live alongside it is a gentler path. The ideas below are general suggestions; not all of them will suit everyone.

  • Come back to your breath. Breathing in slowly through the nose and out a little longer through the mouth can help the body settle.
  • Name the thought. Saying “an anxious thought is passing through right now” puts a small distance between you and the thought.
  • Move your body. A short walk can ease tension.
  • Lean on your routines. A steady rhythm of sleep, meals and rest gives the mind firm ground.

How you speak to yourself

When you feel anxious, the way you talk to yourself matters. Instead of “Why am I always like this?”, try “I am struggling right now, and that is understandable.” A kind inner voice does not add a second burden on top of the anxiety.

When is it good to get support?

If anxiety clearly affects your daily life, your relationships or your sleep, talking to a mental health professional is a good step. It is not a weakness; it is one way of taking care of yourself. If you feel overwhelmed or unsafe, do not wait: call 112, the emergency number in Türkiye, or go to the nearest health facility.

Not every day is the same

Anxiety may not be equally strong every day. Some days feel lighter and some heavier, and this ebb and flow does not by itself mean you are going backwards. When you have a hard day, instead of thinking all your effort was wasted, try telling yourself, “Today was hard, and I can try again tomorrow.” Small steps add up over time.
