The first session is both exciting and a little nerve-racking for most people who take a step towards therapy. Knowing what to expect can soothe some of that. Below you will find a general outline of how a first session usually goes.

The frame of the session

Sessions usually last 50 minutes and can be held online. At the start we talk through how we work together, the principles of confidentiality and the basics of booking. There is always room for your questions.

What do we talk about?

The first session is a meeting in which we get to know each other. You can tell me in your own words what brought you here, what you have been going through lately and what you need. You do not have to say everything the first time. If there is something you would rather not talk about, simply say so.

Sometimes there are a few short questions: the important areas of your life, sleep and daily routine. They are not meant to judge you, but to understand you better.

Getting ready for the first session

Preparing is not required, but a few small things can help you feel at ease:

  • Jot down any questions that come to mind.
  • Try to take the session somewhere calm and uninterrupted.
  • If you are meeting online, test your connection and headphones beforehand.
  • Give yourself a little time before and after the session.

Deciding together

At the end of the first session we think together about whether to continue. There is no need to rush this decision. How comfortable you feel is one of the most important clues you will get during the first session.

Feelings can run high

After a first session it is possible to feel relieved, tired or mixed. All of that is ordinary. Be kind to yourself, and if you can, set aside a quiet hour for yourself that day.

Silence and pace

There may be quiet moments during the session, and that is not a problem. Needing time to think, to collect yourself or to look for the right words is completely natural. The session moves at your pace. You can ask for a pause, come back to a topic later or not go into it at all. If you do not know what to ask, saying so is a fine way to begin.

This post is general information. Every session unfolds a little differently depending on the person. If you feel very low or unsafe, do not wait: call 112, the emergency number in Türkiye.
